Shay Horse is an American Photojournalist/Documentary photographer born and raised in Oklahoma. Shay left Oklahoma after high school to chase after Occupy Wall Street in 2012 and has been following social movements ever since. From OWS to the early beginnings of the Black Lives Matter movement in Ferguson, MO to the protests against the 2014 World Cup (and the 2016 Summer Olympics) in Rio de Janeiro Shay has focused on the under reported and people pushed to the edge to help tell their stories.
The name of this website comes from words Shay Horse used in his coverage of January 20th, Donald Trump's Inauguration Day. Just before Trump officially took power in the United States a protest Shay was documenting was detained by police using a tactic called kettling. Shay was kettled on the corner of NW L street and 12th street with 230+ individuals for hours while Trump's inauguration was under way. Shay was detained there and held in police custody for over 30 hours before being released the next evening. Shay was charged with felony rioting, a federal felony that carries a maximum time of 10 years in prison. Shay's charge was dropped a month after January 20th while almost 200 people were indicted for even more federal felonies. As of now only one trial has come to pass which ended in 42 acquittals for those who went to trial. Shay uses this phrase now as a home for his work because governments cannot be allowed to limit the freedom of expression, no matter how provocative that expression may be. The freedom of expression is a vital core of any democracy.
Shay Horse is currently focusing on the rise of right wing ideology in the United States and those trying to thwart the rising right at every point and turn.
Always ready for assignments.
